The JLP marks the National Day of Mourning

April 28 marks the National Day of Mourning in Canada. The National Day of Mourning is dedicated to those who have lost their lives or been injured on the job. The Canadian Labour Congress established this day in 1984.

Each year on this day, the Canadian flag is flown at half-mast on Parliament Hill, and workers across the country pause their day at 11:00 for a moment of silence to remember those whose lives have been affected by workplace tragedy.

It is also a day to re-commit to improving workplace health and safety in order to prevent future accidents, injuries and deaths.

In the fall of 2022, the JLP’s Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) pilot project trained more than 400 OHS committee members throughout the public service. Its success prompted a renewal in the OHS program, which now offers training throughout the country. The co-facilitated and learner-focused training provides opportunities for learning and skill building, but also for networking across departments. In addition, the JLP’s range of workshops and guided discussions contribute to creating healthier, safer workplace environments for all public-service employees.
