March 8: International Women's Day 2017
Every year, on March 8th, International Women's Day is celebrated. Canada’s theme this year is Equality Matters. Equality matters because, the world needs the talents of everyone and gender stereotypes prevent us from moving ahead.
While some gains have been made in gender equality there is still much more to do. According to the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) 2016 Global Gender Gap Report, gender equality is far from being achieved. At the current rate and given the widening economic gender gap worldwide, it will not be closed for another 170 years. Canada ranks 35th in the WEF index. The slow progress reflects the current state and serves as a call to action to accelerate gender equality.
We must continue to work together to make gender equality a reality.
