IDAHOBIT – Standing at the Heart of Democracy
May 17 marks the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT). This year’s theme, “At the heart of democracy,” highlights the essential role that inclusion and equality play in strong healthy societies.
Members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ have faced growing hostility in many parts of the world in the past year. Authoritarian policies and exclusionary legislations have contributed to a growing climate of fear, hatred, discrimination and marginalization.
Throughout history, 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals and communities everywhere have resisted oppression and worked tirelessly to challenge injustice. Today, they stand at the heart of democracy – proving the power of people coming together to advance equity and human rights. Meaningful, lasting change is only possible when people are empowered to shape the systems that affect them.
The rights of all minority groups are fundamental to healthy democracy. When everyone, including those who have been traditionally marginalized, can fully take part and influence change, democracy flourishes.
The JLP is proud to help promote a diverse and discrimination-free public service. Through its various in-person workshops and virtual discussions, the JLP champions diversity and inclusion, respect for differences, and contributes to the prevention of discrimination, harassment and violence against 2SLGBTQIA+ people.
