National Indigenous Peoples Day
Despite constitutional protections afforded to Indigenous Peoples, the ongoing legacy of colonialism and the trauma and intergenerational impact of the residential school system have contributed to the social, political and cultural marginalization of Indigenous Peoples.
The National Inquiry on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls reveals that persistent and deliberate human and Indigenous rights violations and abuses are the root cause behind Canada’s staggering rates of violence against Indigenous women and girls. The Final Report released on June 3rd, 2019, calls for transformative legal and social changes to resolve the crisis that has devastated Indigenous communities across the country.
