December 10: International Day for Human Rights
December 10 is the International Day for Human Rights. This day was chosen to honour The Universal Declaration of Human Rights’ (UDHR) first proclamation by The United Nations General Assembly on December 10, 1948. The theme for 2025 is “Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials”.
This year’s campaign highlights that human rights are positive, essential and attainable. Human rights are positive in that they bring happiness and safety into our daily lives. They are essential in that they provide the stability and common ground for people to thrive together regardless of their race, gender, religion or background. And they are attainable across those differences and throughout the world, though it may feel like an uphill battle sometimes.
In Canada, the UDHR paved the way for the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms[DB1] . The Charter builds upon the Declaration, which lends its essential concepts to the Charter. The Charter protects Canadians’ fundamental freedoms, democratic rights, legal rights, and official language rights, among others.
The JLP offers in-person workshops and virtual discussions that explore human rights from a Canadian public-service perspective. Preventing Harassment and Violence in the Workplace, Respecting Differences and Anti-Discrimination, Duty to Accommodate, Duty to Accommodate: Let’s Talk! and Anti-Racism: Let’s Talk! all examine ways in which human rights can affect public-service employees and their workplace.
To mark the International Day for Human Rights, why not organize an in-person workshop or virtual discussion for your team?
